Split top woodworking bench. I never use the tool rest function and. If you re going to go with a split top the only thing i d change is the insert. This made for way more work and very hairy glue ups. But i knew that not everybody has the thousands of dollars it takes to buy a quality bench from a woodworking store.

I loved the roubo style bench from the minute i saw it and had to have one. But i don t have thousands of dollars to spend on a professional woodworking bench. This style of bench is named after andré jacob roubo a french woodworker who lived during the 18th century and wrote a massive three volume series on the subject of working wood called l art du menuisier the art of the joiner.
The split top roubo bench plan was inspired by the bench illustrated in plate 11 of andre roubo s classic 17th century treatise on cabinetmaking l art du menuisier0 the design has been enhanced to incorporate the advantages that the benchcrafted tail vise and glide leg vise provide. I made it with the surplus materials i had which was a hell of a lot of 4 4 white oak and curly maple 1 bf from craigslist last year plus a bit of leftover 8 4 white oak i inherited.
